‘Chhattisgarh’s new identity’: CM lays stone for state’s first chip plant; youth from Maoist-hit areas to benefit

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday laid the foundation stone for state’s first Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based semiconductor fabrication unit in New Raipur and said that the government’s aim is not just attracting investment but also ensuring that youth from tribal, rural, and backward regions become participants in the country’s technological revolution.

The plant, which aims to manufacture 10 billion chips annually by 2030, is set to commence commercial production in April-May 2026. “This isn’t just a plant, it’s the identity of the new Chhattisgarh,” the CM said.

The biggest beneficiaries of the plant would be youth from Bastar and other Maoist-affected areas who will receive technical training in Tamil Nadu.

Gallium Nitride is globally recognised as a superior alternative to silicon in high-power, high-frequency applications, due to its efficiency, thermal performance, and durability. The establishment of this facility marks India’s entry into a high-value, strategic segment of the global semiconductor market.

A government official said, “Mainly skilled graduates like BE, B.Tech, polytechnic, diploma and ITI holders will be hired for plant operations. In the first phase, approximately 500 direct jobs will be created. In future expansion of the second phase, it will create 5,000 direct jobs.”

At the event, Eswara Rao Nandam, MD of Polymatech Electronics Ltd, also announced an additional investment of Rs 10,000 crore in Chhattisgarh.

“Developed by Polymatech Electronics Limited with an investment of Rs 1,143 crore, the state-of-the-art facility will produce high-frequency GaN chips catering to advanced 5G and 6G telecommunications infrastructure and marking a major milestone in India’s technological journey,” said a government official. The project is expected to create significant employment opportunities for local talent, while attracting FDI and boosting regional economic development, the official added.

Polymatech Electronics Ltd will also handle the advanced packaging of these high-frequency chips at the Raipur facility, which will also serve as a hub for innovation in radio frequency systems, defence electronics, AI, data analytics, and high-performance computing.

After the BJP government came to power last year, a new industrial policy was formulated to attract investment and boost ease of doing business.

According to an Industry Department official, “The company was allotted land in Sector 5 of Nava Raipur through the tender process in less than 45 days and the registration of the lease deed was completed in less than 25 days. As of now, the company received Stamp Duty Exemption for land registration as per Industrial Development Policy 2024-30. The company will get incentives/subsidies as per norms of IDP.”
